N. Hanumiah

N. Hanumiah was born 5th September 1909 and died 4th January 1991, aged 81. He graduated from the Chamajendra Institute of Technology at Mysore (CTI) in 1934, where he specialised in landscape painting. He was best known for his work in oil painting but completed many fine works in watercolours (and at least one study in gouache!). I have so far been unable to learn what the N stands for in his name, though his father's name was Nagappa Hanumiah, merchant, (interestingly, a 1980  Venkatappa Gallery exhibition booklet states that his father was Nagaiah, a trader dealing in Toor Dal) and Hanumiah's wife was called Lingamma. From an article in the Bangalore Mirror by Suresh Jayaram, I learnt that N. Hanumiah was "more of a farmer" but earned a living from painting and regularly entered works at the annual Mysore Dussera festival exhibition, winning many prizes, including the Maharaja's gold medal in 1937. The King of Mysore was one of N. Hanumiah's many patrons.
