N. Hanumiah:
The Silent Master of Light
N. Hanumiah
may not be a household name today, but among art circles, he is remembered as
the “painter of light.” He was a Mysore-based artist. He was born on 5
September 1909 in Mysore, Karnataka. Hanumiah had an amazing gift for capturing
fleeting moments of sunlight and shade on canvas. His paintings felt like
looking straight into nature - soft skies and peaceful countryside scenes.
What makes
Hanumiah truly inspiring is his humble journey. He was born in a modest family,
so he developed his skills through sheer dedication and an unshakable love for
painting. He studied at the Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA) in
Mysore. There his talent really developed under traditional training. Yet, his
style was still refreshingly his own. Many other artists of his time were into
classical or modernist schools, but Hanumiah struck a balance - he chose
realistic art with a poetic glow.
Another
interesting thing about him is that he rarely sought fame or commercial
success. Other artists used to battle for recognition - but not Hanumiah. He
just quietly painted landscapes and portraits. He let his canvases speak
instead of words. This humility earned him huge respect among fellow painters,
even if the wider world overlooked his genius.
His work was
compared to the impressionists - particularly in the way he played with light
and color. Yet, every brushstroke carried the soul of Mysore - the quiet charm
of the city and the beauty of rural Karnataka.
N. Hanumiah
passed away in 1991. His legacy reminds us that art doesn’t need to shout to be
powerful. Sometimes, it’s the gentle glow of light on canvas that stays the
longest in memory.
