D. P. Roy
Choudhury - The Sculptor of Strength and Hope
Devi Prasad
Roy Choudhury was born in 1899 in Dhaka. He was not just an artist - he was a
dreamer who gave life to stone and bronze. From a young age, he loved shaping
things with his hands. While most kids his age were busy with games, he was
busy turning lumps of clay into figures that seemed alive.
He studied at
the Government College of Art in Calcutta. He later trained under two great
masters- Abanindranath Tagore and Nandalal Bose. The road wasn’t always smooth.
There were struggles, but his love for art kept him moving. Step by step, he
carved a name for himself and became one of India’s most admired sculptors.
His most
famous creation is the “Triumph of Labour” on Marina Beach in Chennai. It shows
four men pushing a giant rock, their muscles straining, their faces determined.
It’s not just a sculpture; it’s a story of workers- their strength, and their
dignity. Even today, people stop and feel inspired when they see it.
Roy Choudhury
wasn’t only an artist. He was also a teacher and later became the principal of
the Madras School of Arts. He guided young talents and encouraged them to
believe in their dreams. He gave his contribution in shaping the future of
Indian art.
What many
don’t know is that he was also a fine painter. His paintings mixed Indian
traditions with modern ideas. They carried a simple but strong message - hope,
courage and life.
Roy Choudhury
passed away in 1975. But his art still speaks. It reminds us that art is not
just about beauty, it’s actually about the spirit to never give up.
